By Stacy Shackford of the Ithaca Journal

ITHACA -- Progressive voters can no longer rely on Democrats to reform state government, gubernatorial candidate Howie Hawkins told Green Party members on Thursday.

At a gathering at the Tompkins County Workers' Center, the activist from Syracuse compared progressive Democrats to Charlie Brown and the party leadership to Lucy, who repeatedly dangles promises of reform like her famous cartoon football, only to pull it away at the last moment.

Like Charlie Brown, it is time for Democrats to learn their lesson, stop falling for the same old tricks and pursue other solutions, Hawkins said.

Green Candidate Embarks on Electoral Quest PDF Print E-mail

By Billy Wharton of the Bronx County Independent Examiner

Green Party candidate for Governor, Howie Hawkins, has launched a bid to collect the 15,000 signatures necessary to appear on the electoral ballot this fall. Supporters from all corners of the State hit the pavement this week in a race against the clock to sign up voters. The entire registration must be completed in five weeks time and must include voters in at least half of the congressional districts in the state.

The Hawkins campaign has taken a grassroots approach to collecting signatures by posting the form and an instructional video on their website. In the video, Hawkins encourages volunteers to present the simple message to voters of “Can you help me out with a signature?” The campaign aims to collect close to 30,000 signatures in order to ensure that Hawkins will qualify even if the mainstream parties challenge the signatures.

Petition 2010! Every Green Is Needed PDF Print E-mail

Dear NY Green Party supporter:

It's our mission to provide a progressive Green alternative to the corporate agenda of the Democrats and Republicans, and build support for a different world. To that end, we have nominated an exciting slate of candidates for statewide office, including Howie Hawkins for GovernorGloria Mattera for Lt. GovernorColia Clark and Cecile Lawrence for US Senate, and Julia Willebrand for Comptroller.

This is the time to regain our ballot status -- to do that we need 50,000 votes for Governor. It's the perfect year, with voters across New York fed up with the corruption in Albany and the pro-corporate bailout, pro-war agenda in DC. They ache to see candidates stand strong for peace, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, single payer-universal health care, and an aggressive program to create living wage jobs.

The first step is to get on the ballot, which means 30,000 signatures from NY State registered voters. Of that 30,000 we need at least 100 signatures from half of the congressional districts across the state.

It's a lot of work...and it can't be done without you.

Green Tip

Change to fluorescent bulbs. If every house in the United States changed all of the light bulbs in their house, that would be equivalent to taking one million cars off the streets.
